Horse & Rider Physiotherapy Clinics

All of our therapeutic treatments have a single objective: to provide you both with tailor-made solutions for your health and wellbeing. You and your horse work as a team and ensuring that you are both in the best of health is our main priority. Our horse and rider physiotherapy clinics were launched about 4 years ago and have proved to be extremely popular and give great value for money.

What are horse and rider physiotherapy clinics?

The clinic will involve a full physiotherapy assessment of horse and/or rider. The assessment will provide us with the information to help understand and address rider and/or horse movement dysfunctions and how that can affect the cohesion and performance of the combination. Research has shown how “crooked riders” can be helped by physiotherapy to improve their symmetry - For the full article click here.

It is well known that riders can affect the way the horse carries itself. Therefore as a Chartered Physiotherapist, it is important to address the horses’ “crookedness” as well as the asymmetry of riders. By improving the dynamic relationship between the horse and rider the partnership improves.

The rider assessment:

The rider assessment takes around 1.5-2 hours:

  • The posture, seat and symmetry will be assessed during the ridden assessment.
  • A video of the ridden assessment may also be taken and will show you riding towards and away from Sune on both reins and in walk, trot and sometimes canter.
  • The rider will be assessed and treated in a private room, dismounted. This will take approximately 45-60 minutes. The rider will undergo a dismounted assessment with exercises such as bending, twisting and the overall posture.
  • A ridden re-assessment may be done after the dismounted session to show the “before and after”.
  • A copy of the video and report will be sent to the client within a week of the session and will include Home Exercise Programmes (HEP's) for you to continue your improvement at home.

The horse assessment:

The full assessment, treatment and reassessment of the equine athlete takes around  1.5 - 2hours and may consist of:

  • A static assessment (posture, muscle development and symmetry)
  • Dynamic assessment consisting of gait assessment in straight lines (soft and/or hard), tight turns, rein back, and the horse may also be seen on the lunge on both the soft and hard.
  • Treatment will be provided if necessary and will take approximately 45 minutes.
  • A reassessment of the horse may then follow.

What to wear:

During your ridden assessment a visualise jacket will be provided, which is a stretchy black jacket, similar to a base layer. This jacket has green lines on it, which show up really well on video and highlight any dysfunctions in your posture and position. The visualise jacket will be provided by Sune du Toit & Associates. If you could also wear some tight breeches or riding tights, of a neutral colour and without patterns, this also helps to get a more direct look at your riding position.

During the dismounted session and for your human treatment, a vest or a spaghetti strap top and shorts should be worn.

Please feel free to bring a warm coat and lots of layers, especially during the winter months. You will only be wearing the visualise jacket for a short space of time, so you can put a warmer jacket on immediately after you have dismounted.

Please note: Riding Hats to the current standard should be worn at all times while mounted. Sune du Toit & Associates also recommend that one is worn while handling the horse from the ground. You will be asked to lunge your horse, so a pair of gloves may also be beneficial.
